Coffs Harbour, Dorrigo and Nambucca

(2015/03/25-26) … woken up by locals who get there for fishing and driving their boats around, was a good sign to leave early. Directly on the way down, Coffs Harbour, a city with a bit history (the Queen visited some decades before) but the weather was rainy and totally grey. I had a good time window for a short walk through the harbour and Mutton Bird Island to get a nice view above the Harbour. The rest of the day was limited to driving into the direction Dorrigo and it’s National Park. Before getting there, a night in Thora was mandatory to wait for the better weather on the next day…

he morning started a bit grey but it didn’t took long until the sun cam out. After a mandatory fuel stop in Dorrigo and the visit of its Dangar Falls the Dorrigo National Park got me. The good thing, it was for free or better by donation. Other NP charges you $10 per person and additional $7 for the car. They really had a nice walk in a circle around the rainforest with beautiful old trees, nature and several falls. By the way, the road here is called “The Waterfall Way”, because there are lot of falls on the 165km long road. On the road back to the Pacific Highway i did a short stop in Bellingen which had some nice old buildings on the street. A lot more villages inlands have this style of buildings and looking pretty cool.

Having not much traffic on the roads and not so much interesting to see (in my view and available time) i had time to visit Nambucca. Nice beaches, nice view and a quarry breakwater wall which got painted by locals and some travels with some “graffiti”. It looks definitely better then the boring grey. For my camping spot i had to leave the “new” A1 Pacific Highway and follow the “Old Pacific Highway”, where near Wootton and old rest area is. It was the spookiest place i stayed for a night. This place is beside the old but still used road (about 10 cars passed in the 4 hours till i went to bed) is in the middle of the Myall National Park, a kind of rainforest. I was alone there and the fire pit was quickly lighten up to chase the mosquitos (mossies, mozzies) away. Totally weird noises everywhere, movement behind each busch, falling stuff from the trees caused by birds. Combined with the darkness and just a little bit light by the sky, it was really scary. The tent was setup because it was still wet inside and outside from the rain the day before and it needed to be dry for packing and for the burn. Forecast for this night was again freezing 12 degrees and the fact that i got terrified a few times, it was better to sleep in the car again 😉 …
