Melbourne-Darwin Day 9 / Coober Pedy – Kulgera 424km

Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 20.08.04(2015/03/03) … we enjoyed our day off and continued now our tour on the famous Stuart Highway. The horizon this morning was really dark and ready for rain, better i hoped for a bit rain because this cools down the ride to our next stop in Kulgera. Most of us are getting back on the road very early to choose the morning hours where its’s not too hot to drive the most of the distance. I stopped after a few kilometres for the daily morning check of the oil in the bike and made some last pictures of the mines and rain which gone down in the distance. Sadly no rain hit us and a few hours later it was hot again. We also met on the Stuart Highway our first Road Trains. You’re driving with 110km/h and it feels like driving against a wall and immediately shaken when a Road Train passes in the other direction with 100km/h. Oh, 100km/h?…..yeah, two of us are alway idling on the road with about 70-90km/h, they got a problem that road trains have to pass them.

Guess how you would less pat them….please guess…..

passing lane? Nope…

stopping on the side lane? Nope…

stopping on gravel or in the bush? Nope…

speeding up? Nope…

…come one tray one more time….

Beam me up Scotti ? Nope…

Okay, here is the way how he let passed a road train. Please never ever do this! You have a road train behind you, pushing you with 100km/h and you are driving about 80-90km/h. The road train set his turn signal for overtaking, started to drive on the counter lane, as Horst (name changed), with 90km/h  also set his turn indicator to drive to the counter lane and waved to the road train that he should pass him on the regular driving lane! (watched, but sadly not recorded by our service car). What a pity, he didn’t caused an accident and died. *facepalm* Yeah, that are stories if you travel with a group of people you haven’t chosen yourself. Not to mention that they also think that it’s okay to drive with jet helmets and without proper protections/cloths.

We entered the Northern Territory and after few kilometre the nature changed to bit more green. The Kulgera Roadhouse was a nice pub and we where welcomed with an cold beer (we had to pay for, of course), but a marketing man from the Northern Brewing Company was there and we got some T-Shirts. We? Oh sorry, the first 3 persons, because we had to wait for the others. But waiting with cold beer and air-condition is not that bad. A talk with the buddies here was nice as they told that the Roadhouse was flooded in January by a flash flood and they showed us some pictures. Hobbies out there? Caching poisoning animals. He showed us a jars with scorpions in alcohol. Alcohol? Thanks for this keyword 🙂 They also have a small bottle (2L) of beer sold by the NT Brewery. Damn, if i had know this before, i would had ordered this bottle instantly before drinking my others ones…
