Wellington, the hobbits and a ferry

(2015/01/26-29) … late afternoon we arrived Wellington and our hotel we had chosen for a few days. Noticed on Facebook, one of our burner friends, Betljuice, has birthday, is saying in Wellington too and is looking out for others to have a beer together. He got us with “beer” :-). We met him and of course some other burners from the Kiwiburn at the Rouge And Vagabond where we was sitting together on bean bags and grass. He got one of my beautiful Kauai postcards, drawn by Eric and Lauren. For this night i had removed my dressing from wound so it had its first hours on air. It looked still not okay, but better also the days before. What todo on Wellington? Max and me decided to stick on Betljuice and Simon (a real LOTR nerd) 🙂 friends for a Lord of the Rings Tour. I’m not really a fan of the movies but under my circumstances it was good choice. Easy sightseeing without driving on my own, relaxing and still seeing something around Wellington.

After a great breakfast we arrived just in time to our tourbus. Luckily for Betljuice and Simon, they had breakfast at the same place but didn’t got their breakfast in time, we talked a bit to the two girls who drove the tourbus that they will come in few minutes. The tour was passing some locations where the movies where filmed, but currently there is nothing left where you could notice that. To prove that, they always showed us some pictures from the movie, where you could see a bit of it. Out of that we made some fun during the drive from one point to the other. The Harcourt Park where also some scenes where filmed was pretty nice, but also not really much to see from a former film set. Despite of that, we had a lot of fun, making or copying scenes of the movie with our self and some dresses. As finish for the tour we visited the WetaCave in Miramar, a studio producing all that cloths, weapons, armour, puppets and other cool stuff which is used in a lot of different movies. Was pretty cool to see a bit form behind the scenes. ART! Cool stuff! They had a really cool t-shirt which max and me had to buy. Ekim Burger in the well known Cuba Street was called for dinner, a hipster food trunk with a nice ambient atmosphere. Betljuice, Simon and Max decided to head on to an other bar and/or going out for party, while i decided to go back to the hotel and get my rest for the arm.

The next day, Max was still tilt out because of partying hard with Betljuice, James, Richard and Piper, i went to downtown to see some sights of Wellington. It was just a short drive by car and some sights by a walk. A great lookout of Mount Victoria, a walk along the pier, booked my ferry for the next day, a ride with the cable car up, the cable car museum and a short walk in the botanical garden. Wellington is a nice city, with some cool streets, pubs, bars, nice and bay area with mountains, which reminded me just a little bit to Cape Town. Back in the hotel, Max was back alive and we drove to Tims house where James, Richard and Piper stayed to have a cool BBQ with them. This was definitely the best way to say goodbye to the Northisland and to hang around with some burners we met at Kiwiburn before.

Today, the last day in Wellington, i spend some time with Max in the Te Papa Museum before i had to stay goodbye to him. I really enjoyed the time with him, especially that he was a good buddy to talk and to get my thoughts away from my arm. While queuing to board the ferry, of course, i met some other Kiwiburns behind me. For the ferry i had chosen an upgrade to have complimentary food, drinks and free Wifi, which was totally worth and delicious. The first hours driving on the Southisland gave me some short and nice impressions of the nature, which i missed already a bit. The night i stayed at the McKee campground, a bit south of Motueka with goal for the next days, to go north as far as possible. The weather report predicted rain, wind and clouds, so i would have enough time for driving from Farewell Spit down the west coast to the glaciers and getting hopefully a better weather…
