Hanalei and the try to get to North Shore

…KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK……Who is there? The Police! It was 3am in the morning, as an police man woke me up. Do you know that you broke to laws? First, you are sleeping in a car and second you are camping in an park. Okay, never argue with an cop at 3am that sleeping in a car (which is very criminal) is NOT camping. Anyways, he asked for my ID and as i showed him my German passport the situation was a bit more calm. He friendly advised me to get an camping permission. As i told him i have a permission from tomorrow morning or better “later” he was satisfied and i was allowed to stay here till the morning. Some weird thoughts in my mind, that a law risks the life of people while driving sleepy by an law that sleeping in an car is prohibited!

In the morning i made the decision to drove around the island an head to Hanalei and North Shore to do the first miles of the hike to Napali Coast. What i forgot? The traffic jam in the region Kapaa! That insane traffic from/to Lihu’e and the Airport bound to the exclusive hotel parks and the north bound cities/villages. I lost about one  hours and arrived at noon in Hanalei. Even i got hungry and i decided to stop there. Some nice shops made me for a longer stop and to write postcards. The clouds went up and so i canceled the idea of hiking and spending the last hour of sun on the beach at Ha’ena Tunnels beach. I liked snorkeling there, because the waves broke about a 200m in front of the beach on a reef, so there was a calm sea.

Having the same long trip back to get to the campground at Polihale and the expected traffic jam made me leaving a bit earlier to arrive before its getting dark. The last 3 miles to get there was on a dirt road which ended up in the middle of sand dunes. I setup my tent in the darkness in an small valley between dunes underneath trees where i might have some shelter or protection against some wind.  In the distance i spotted some people with hammocks because they had some LED’s above it. Burners? Other nice people? There where some others already The night was calm and silent and i fell asleep like a rock on the sand…(2014/12/29)
