appendix to the post before (2014/12/19)
…after setup of my tent i got hungry and drove to Hana and checkout to local store and find something for dinner. The general store, the only within the next 30 miles, looked really fancy and rustically. Bought some beer, tacos, cheese and ice. The warm food was already sold out and i choose to stop at one of these small food stands or food trucks. Surf Burro was it’s name, i guy still wearing his wet suit made me a burrito while in the meantime i started to chat with the girl on the cashier window. She mentioned my Burning Man button and we had real nice talk about being on burns and i almost forgot to pay…
…after having a good night in the tent and lucky about not had to sleep in the car, my motivation was slowed down as i open the zipper of my tent and recognised that it was grey with dark clouds. I walked around in the park and checked out the local sights, small cemeteries, blowhole and a grove with a mystic story. Sadly it was already 10:30, so the park was already flooded by tourists with tourbusses and cars and i got no chance to get some good pictures of the camp, park, beach and grove. Especially in the grove where a lot people swimming, so i waived my idea to swim in there. Even the weather wasn’t optimal for that and i choose to hike a small hike along the coast to the airport. I passed some pools and cliffs, where the strong waves hit the stones. It felt like rain, but it was just the sea spray which was in the air. The pool looked calm, only few small waves was spilling water in it, but i already now that this is treacherous. Exact in this moment a hug wave splashed in to the pool and you could hear the big rocks moving in the pool. Wow, that was impressive. No wonder that people die on blowholes or ocean pools when tourists go in the without thinking what can happens. I flowed that trail above wiggly rocks and steep parts till i reached the airport. Airport? No the trail ended directly at the runway. Hana Airport is a very small ones where only few planes a day arrive and leave, more like small propellers planes and gliders. On the way back is stumbled on a steep path and got my balance back, but i cut my and on that razor sharp lava stones. The spray of the sea started to hurt in the wounds and the sun did it rest, because it got clear and sunny. As i passed a grave i thought, this is really a good place to sleep long and took a picture as a wave hits the cliff.
Back at my tent i disinfected my wounds ate a short snack and headed on the other trail which leads to Hana. Both trails where every old and was already used in the 16h century by the locals to get around on the island. Only few miles are still active and used, like the part from the park to Hana. This trail was about 3 miles long and follows some higher cliffs, abandoned hut and some spots for fishermen and finally ended near the beach park. The last part followed an dirt road from a beach near Hana though some huts where local lives and was greeted by their barking dogs and trash which was dumped in the forrest, apart from the paved and touristy roads. Okay on some way it looked good but this shouldn’t be dumped there.
Even here, in Hana, away from the expensive tourist bunkers you find properties where you can rent for $500 a day a cottage or a bit cheaper some rooms to rent, but still expensive. Lucky that they fit in the surrounding and not spot directly in your face and the family feeling in Hana is kept a bit. Todays stop? Of course the Hanesgewa General store to buy ice and get back to the Surf Burro for my afternoon lunch. Sadly the burner girl wasn’t there, but this food truck was still delicious and tasty. While eating a snack i read in the LP guide that on Fridays and Saturdays the local farmers fire up and clay oven and make fresh pizza from the fruits and vegetables on their fields, of course organic. Yes, i have to try that, but first i had to walk the 3 miles back on the road to my tent to drop my ice. The way felt more longer then the hike on the lava rocks and cliffs, but it was worth walking instead of hitch hiking, because even there you can get a great view to the nature and nice spots there. Dropped my ice, got in the car an drove to the 1,5 mile further, to the farmers market with the oven. I order my pizza, APPLE JACK, with BBQ pulled pork, jackfruit, pineapple and green onions. This spot was very crowed and looked like that this is even a spot for the locals in Hana to meet up. Exactly that was it, i ran into this burner girl from the food truck and was invited to the table with their friends. Had a nice talk with all of them, got some free samples from the farmers goods they sold and finally my pizza. Yummy! Another nice day with 10,5km hiking and with a delicious happy end, ended .…(2014/12/20)
