Melbourne-Darwin Day 15 / Alice Springs – Devils Marbles 414km

Screen Shot 2015-03-16 at 20.35.50(2015/03/09) … riding the Stuart Highway north….north…through the Northern Territory, noticing the more and more greener nature beside the road. Continuously driving about 100-110km/h (allowed was 130km/h) because this was the comfortable speed on the bike, always passing about the same signs on the road. Whaaaaaaaaaat? Moment! I have to turn around to enjoy the new sighting of a sign. No, it wasn’t “#FINDDANE”, he is still missed since December on his way to Darwin, it was the sign you know very well from German roads. An explicit sign of no speed limits. Strange, i haven’t seen this since a very long time. It was followed by “Open Speed Zone Ahead, Drive to Conditions”. I didn’t knew till now, that there is a country with an public road where also have no speed limit. If you think this road is easy, because it was almost just straight on, then you think wrong. Why? Wildlife and Cattle on the roads. During my ride up we saw a lot of cars and dead cows and dead animals beside the roads. I cannot imagine of driving 200km/h and then hitting a cow.

More strange things appeared, roadhouses really try to attract people to stop, an Ufo Landing Pad in Wycliff and of course the need for fuel let us stop there. And gas stations are also thirsty as we were, so a road train stopped and filled the tanks for them. It was a nice spot to wait for the rest of us, with cold beer (not the best like advertised on the sign) and a good choice of kinds and brands in the cooler. The last stop for today were we stopped was a collection of massive stones where we would have our last real outback camping. It was a great night without a tent, sleeping on dedicated sleeping benches and enjoying the sky without clouds…

Here some more goodies, this one is features by Tobi who took some pictures with his camera on the sky and the Southern Cross:
